Korean War Timeline
By 1950, the world had split into two hostile camps, divided by ideology and armed with nuclear weapons. Over the next 40 years, we will read, that the superpowers confronted each other indirectly, as in Vietnam and Afghanistan. At other times, they confronted each other directly, as in the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Our next section will cover détente, which created a more conciliatory atmosphere between the superpowers, yet the possibility of nuclear annihilation was always present.
The knowledge that the Third World War would leave few survivors was never far from the minds of the superpower leaders.
